Art Educator Deborah Filbin accepts the Minx M. Auerbach Award from Through the Flower board member and daughter of Minx M. Auerbach, Penny A. Friedberg on July 12, 2011 at the ACA Galleries in Chelsea.
Deborah N. Filbin has been an art teacher at Bloom High School, Chicago Heights, Illinois, since 1999. A 2010 participant in The Dinner Party Institute, she is the 2011 recipient of the Minx Auerbach Award for Excellence in Teaching and will receive the award during the ACA Galleries reception in NYC on the evening of July 12.
Deborah Filbin’s award-winning curriculum exemplifies the way in which The Dinner Party Curriculum can be adapted for use by teachers. Ms. Filbin drew upon six of the fourteen Encounters to develop a series of lessons for students enrolled in her Art Fundamentals class at Bloom High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois. Students ranging from 10th to 12th grades investigated the meaning of The Dinner Party, explored concepts and ideas associated with feminism, discovered feminist art and artists, looked deeply into the artistic decisions made by Judy Chicago in creating the iconic artwork, considered the contributions of significant women in their own lives, and then created their own multi-media artworks in their honor.
